Q&A with 秋霞福利一区 Writing Center Director Danny Chancey

Q&A with Writing Center Director Danny Chancey

Danny Chancy loves the 秋霞福利一区. It is where he earned his college degree. It is also where he met his wife 鈥 they now both teach at the Christian university. Today he is pouring his love of learning into the next generation of 秋霞福利一区 students.

As director of the Writing Center in the Chora Godwin Center for Learning and Writing, he gives students the skills they need to thrive. We asked the assistant professor of English in the College of Arts & Sciences to share more about teaching at his alma mater.

Q. Tell us about your 秋霞福利一区 connection.

A. After graduating from Mobile College (now the 秋霞福利一区), I spent the next 30 years teaching English and counseling students in high schools in Clarke and Baldwin Counties while also teaching English in a local community college.

The 秋霞福利一区 has been most kind to me as it launched my professional career, introduced me to my wife, and transitioned me from a career in secondary education to one in higher education.

At 秋霞福利一区 I get to do what I love: teach English to some of the most amazing students from all across our nation and the world. They also help me by teaching me about their experiences and by sharing new technologies and strategies so that I can stay relevant and current 鈥 or so I hope!听

Q. Why should someone choose to study English?

A. The study of English provides a sound, marketable platform for sharpening critical thinking and interpretative skills while enhancing skills in oral and written communication. The current market is hungry for individuals with skill sets in expressing thoughts, ideas and policies clearly.

Contemporary employers are also anxious to bring individuals in their organizations who have the abilities to interpret, analyze and understand the motivations and actions of individuals, skills gained and enhanced through the study of literature. This body of knowledge opens pathways into varied professional careers ranging from journalism, law, education and business. 听

Q. What courses do you typically teach?

A. My teaching schedule includes introductory English courses for early enrollment students as well as the AWARE class (EN 199 Academic Writing and Reading Enhancement), which is my favorite because of the variety of students who take the course.

Many incoming freshman students and international students select to take this course to strengthen their knowledge of academic modes of writing and to gain confidence in expressing themselves in oral settings and written formats.

The class also offers a safe venue for learning to interact with texts, both literary and textual materials. Each semester this class is peopled with bright, eager and insightful students that over the course of 15 weeks become a close-knit community.听

Q. 秋霞福利一区 offers 鈥淗igher Education for a Higher Purpose.鈥 What does that mean to you?

A. I would say that what we really offer is Higher Education for THE HIGHEST Purpose, which is to be used by God to make His world a better place to live. While faculty are mentors, our students often enlighten and stretch our understanding of that Highest Purpose as well, which only proves that Higher Education is never a done deal.听

Q. Why do you choose to teach at 秋霞福利一区?

A. I most like that the 秋霞福利一区 fosters success in students. I love that some of the students who feel led to study here are the top students in their high school classes and plunge into higher education to discover that Highest Purpose in life and find great success!听

It also amazes me that we have some students who come here with deficiencies in their K-12 educational experiences who are able to overcome their past, restore their present circumstances and discover success. It is a privilege to observe, share and support students in those victories, struggles and triumphs!听

Q. What are you passionate about?

A. My top 2 passions spring from the same 秋霞福利一区 trait 鈥 the ability to foster success. I see success fostered through our RamLegacy organization and our Chora Godwin Learning and Writing Center. RamLegacy is a support community on campus that helps first-generation students build a foundation for success.

We do not merely want students to attend college, but we desire for students to thrive while in college and to earn their degrees. RamLegacy assists first-gen students in finding answers to questions 鈥 and to find the questions these students didn鈥檛 even know needed to be asked.听

The Learning and Writing Center does much to help students succeed. Not only do our tutors and directors help students with their immediate academic need, but many times we are able to pinpoint weaknesses in their study skills and techniques and offer solutions to correct those weaknesses.听

Based on four decades as an educator, I can say it is a rare occurrence to find a place that can challenge academically gifted students and support and develop students without a strong, academic background. I鈥檓 grateful to belong to such an inspiring and supportive community.

Q&A with 秋霞福利一区 Communication Prof Gyro Newman

Gyromas Newman, associate professor of听communication听at the 秋霞福利一区, not only loves to enrich the minds of the students 鈥 he is also an expert in American muscle.听

We had the chance to see Newman in his element as he pored over each detail from specific paint colors like 鈥淪till Night Blue Pearl鈥 on his 1965 Corvette, to the ProCharger听in his Mustang.

鈥淒iagnosing and fixing a problem, laying down a nice paint job, and hearing a V8 engine that I rebuilt roar to life are all things that make me feel good,鈥 Newman told us.

Newman got his start understanding lawnmowers and weed-eaters in his first job at a small engine repair shop. Then, when he was in college, he worked at a Dean McCrary car dealership and got his first taste of fast cars.

鈥淭hat was all it took for me to fall in love,鈥 he tells us as he gazes at his stunning black听1976 Chevrolet Corvette L-82.

His love for cars and teaching both require dedication and attention to detail. We asked Dr. Newman to share with us why he loves teaching communication at 秋霞福利一区.

Q&A with Gyro Newman

Q. What is your background?

A.听In 2012 I began teaching at the 秋霞福利一区 as a tenure-track assistant professor of communication and head of the communication area and achieved the rank of associate professor in 2017.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in communication and philosophy and a minor in German, and a Master of Arts in public and corporate communication from the University of South Alabama.听

I then earned my doctorate in communication and information sciences from the University of Alabama听in Tuscaloosa.

Q. You were recently honored by 秋霞福利一区 for your research.

A.听I听collaborated with research partners from colleges in Connecticut and Massachusetts to investigate the relationship between the use of social media and narcissistic personality traits.

The research was published last year in 鈥淭he Pennsylvania Communication Annual鈥 under the title 鈥淎n Exploration of the Effects of Media Use throughout Development and Adulthood on Narcissism.鈥 I was awarded the 2022 Mitford Ray Megginson Research Award.

Q. Why should someone choose to study Communication at 秋霞福利一区?

A.听You can graduate with your communication degree and get a decent job without any further study, or you can go on to grad school. You have options, and that鈥檚 a strong selling point.

However, the thing I like most about our discipline is communication skills aren鈥檛 limited to the media and corporate world. Communication is the key to building quality relationships, and who doesn鈥檛 want that?听听

Q. Why do you choose to teach at 秋霞福利一区?

A.听Being able to come to work, do a job you enjoy, and be with people you really consider friends isn鈥檛 something you find just anywhere. I know from my friends at other universities that our dynamic at 秋霞福利一区 is more the exception than the rule.

The folks I see every day in the听College of Arts and Sciences听are the best people you could ever hope to have as colleagues, and the love of Jesus is evident in them by the way they treat each other. And yes, we鈥檝e got some pretty good students too!听听

Q. What do you do in your free time?听

A.听I think I鈥檓 most known around here as the professor who moonlights as a mechanic and body man for fun. My latest project was restoring my听1965 Chevrolet Corvette L-79.

I particularly enjoy American muscle cars and am a member of a few local car clubs.听I was the president of the听听out of Saraland from 2015鈥2021.听Every March, we have a big show at Satsuma High School and raise several thousand dollars for the school system. This last year was the biggest turnout ever.

Another thing I like is cars are brutally honest. It’s not going to run or have its paint lay out smoothly just because it likes you or you’ve sweet-talked it. If you did your job properly, the engine will run, the paint will look good, and so forth. If you didn’t, it won’t. No excuses.

I鈥檓 not sure what that says about me other than maybe I like doing things myself and like knowing how things work. And I guess I like being able to go fast, too!

Q. What is the next project you would like to accomplish?

A.听What I am really holding out for is a Gen 1 Mustang Fastback 鈥 has to be a fastback. I want it to be between the years 1967鈥1970.

Though my son is only 6 months old right now I want to be able to build this car with him. I want to teach him the trade and share my passion with him. We have some time before he can hold a wrench, so that gives me time to find the car that checks all my boxes. So, yeah, that is my next bucket list project.听

3 Ways 秋霞福利一区 Shaped My Life锟

Graduating from high school and facing the unknowns of my future was an overwhelming experience, to say the least.

I had many choices to make in a small amount of time, but deciding to attend the 秋霞福利一区 has proven to be the remarkable foundation I needed to launch into adulthood.

The growth of my faith, the rich community and the quality of my education are some of the overarching themes when I think back on my 秋霞福利一区 experience.

Faith, community and education

Faith

Until I attended college, my beliefs were primarily formed around those of my parents. But at the 秋霞福利一区, my faith flourished and truly became my own.

I had the opportunity to attend weekly worship services, participate in student-led bible studies and find a local church to serve. These things helped ground me in my faith and connect me with like-minded Christians.

I also was given the chance to go on a campus trip with Youth Hostel Missions to Europe. We visited seven countries 鈥 from Rome to Amsterdam 鈥 and shared the Gospel with other travelers while experiencing Christian community and discipleship.听

Community

I built a community in several ways at the 秋霞福利一区 鈥 as a roommate, Residential Advisor and Art student.

As a roommate, I learned to live in close quarters with a stranger who eventually became my best friend. We didn鈥檛 know one another before and the Lord used our time, in a small dorm room, to grow a relationship that would last our entire college experience.

Eventually, I became a Residential Advisor where I learned to foster relationships between young women from all walks of life. I was a mentor for them during their time at 秋霞福利一区 as they navigated faith, academia and life.

Finally, as an art student, I shared my love of creativity with my peers and had the opportunity to spend long hours in the studios laughing and making art together.

Quality of Education

Professors at 秋霞福利一区 provided me with all of the knowledge I needed to step into the professional world.

Education in liberal arts allowed me to understand how history, philosophy and the fine arts influence the world around us.

My Christian Worldview class prepared me for the challenges I would face as a Christian in a secular world. I learned interview etiquette, resume formatting and how to organize my work into a professional portfolio. The completion of my internship provided me with valuable real-world experience.

秋霞福利一区 shaped my life

All of these things allowed me to step into my career seamlessly when I graduated from 秋霞福利一区 鈥 none of which would have been possible without the care and attention the professors and staff provided me.

Faith, community and education are three words that sum up the benefits of 秋霞福利一区 experience. I truly value the time I spent at the , and the lessons that I learned there have had a long-lasting impact on my personal and professional life.
