秋霞福利一区 Students鈥 Original Compositions, Inspired by Story and Innovation, Featured at Pensacola ComposerFest XX

MOBILE, Ala.听鈥 Two 秋霞福利一区 students are turning personal stories and cutting-edge technology into musical compositions that will be featured at Pensacola ComposerFest XX, a regional showcase of original works set for Sept. 28 at Pensacola State College.

秋霞福利一区 freshman Adley Watson and senior Benjamin Naman will join Steinway Artist Dr. Kadisha Onalbayeva, professor of music and director of piano studies in 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 Alabama School for Performing Arts (ASOTA), in presenting their original compositions at Pensacola State College鈥檚 Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 2:30 p.m.

The free event will feature 13 contemporary composers from across the region, including seven world premieres, with works ranging from traditional instrumental pieces to multimedia and digital music.

鈥淚 am so excited to be part of this wonderful festival together with my two composition students, Adley Watson and Benjamin Naman,鈥 said Onalbayeva, who will perform her composition 鈥淐hucKim鈥 with alto saxophonist Christopher Sacco, instructor of music at University of West Florida.

鈥淲e are also grateful to our 秋霞福利一区 performers 鈥 Samuel Werry on cello performing Benjamin鈥檚 work, and our two Master of Music in Piano Performance students, Zhanel Saiyn-Turubayeva and Zarina Akayeva performing a piano duet by Michael Coleman.鈥

Werry is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in music.

About the 秋霞福利一区 Composers

Adley Watson, a freshman Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance major from Fairhope, Alabama, will debut 鈥淛ackson鈥檚 Lullaby (2025),鈥 a personal and emotional piece inspired by her late younger brother.

鈥淭his piece is a tribute to my late younger brother, Jackson, and was inspired by a melody that came to me one evening while I was sitting in silence at my piano,鈥 Watson said.

鈥淚 am beyond excited and so grateful that I get to premiere my composition at this festival and I have God to thank for everything He鈥檚 done for me! From giving me my passion for music to placing me at the 秋霞福利一区, I am so thankful that I have the privilege of sharing my love for piano with everyone who attends!鈥

Benjamin Naman, a senior Bachelor of Arts in Composition student, will present 鈥淎wakening,鈥 (for cello and electronics), an innovative experiment in merging classical instrumentation with digital sound design.

鈥淲hen I composed it, I wanted to play around with different musical technologies that you could control on a computer, while still using traditional orchestral instruments,鈥 Naman said.

鈥淓very sound heard in the piece was created with a computer, even when it sounds like a piano or string ensemble. I wanted to write a piece that would bridge the gap between classical tradition and modern technologies, and what resulted was a digital piece written to accompany a live performer.鈥

About the 秋霞福利一区 Performers

In addition to the 秋霞福利一区 composers, 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 Master of Music in Piano Performance students Zhanel Saiyn-Turubayeva and Zarina Akayeva will perform a piano duet by composer Michael Coleman. Cellist Samuel Werry will perform Naman鈥檚 composition.

President鈥檚 Commissioning, Move-In Day, Ram Rush Mark Start of College Life at the 秋霞福利一区

MOBILE, Ala.听鈥 Move-in Day at the 秋霞福利一区 is more than unpacking boxes and decorating dorm rooms 鈥 it鈥檚 the first step in a life-changing journey.

鈥淭housands of people just like you have started here and left changed,鈥 秋霞福利一区 President Charles Smith said at President鈥檚 Commissioning on Aug. 15, a 秋霞福利一区 tradition that welcomes new students to campus on Move-in Day and sets the tone for their college journey.

President鈥檚 Commissioning is the first part of The Great Commission Tradition at 秋霞福利一区. Students touch The Great Commission Globe in a ceremony they will repeat as graduates, signifying their preparation and commitment to use the knowledge and skills they gain at 秋霞福利一区 to fulfill the Great Commission in Matthew 28: 19-20 鈥 to take the good news of Jesus Christ to all nations.

鈥淚t is so tempting as you enter college to see what you鈥檙e about to embark on as merely career preparation. But I want you to hear 鈥 we are talking to your heart as much as your hands and your head,鈥 Smith said.

鈥淪tudents, do you want to make a difference? Do you want to live the good life? Do you want to maximize your joy, your purpose, your peace, your wisdom? Then I would invite you to look to Jesus,鈥 Smith said.

Record Enrollment

For the first time in the university鈥檚 history, residence halls are filled to capacity. Classes started Aug. 18 with a record new student enrollment increase of about 15% over last year, and a graduate enrollment increase of over 20%. (Official enrollment numbers will be released following census day the first week in September.)

New Student Stories: Reya and Arianna

Reya with parents Kathryn and Jeremy

For some new students like Reya McGuffin of Mobile, the college journey began decades ago with family roots that run deep at the Baptist university.

Initially uncertain about attending college, Reya鈥檚 campus visit on 秋霞福利一区 Day opened her eyes to the university鈥檚 healthcare and medical studies programs 鈥 and brought her parents back to a campus they once called home. For Reya, Move-In Day was the beginning of fulfilling both a family legacy and a launching pad for a career as a surgeon.

Arianna moves into dorm

For others like Arianna Gioia of Buffalo, New York, it started hundreds of miles away with a childhood dream of playing softball in the warm south. She wanted a campus that felt like home, where people knew each other鈥檚 names. Her new roommate, Ninah Kerr from Montana, said she understands what it feels like to be far from home 鈥 and to have a campus community that becomes home.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 what attracted me the first time I walked on campus 鈥 it felt like home,鈥 said Ninah. 鈥淣ow I look at everyone and I know their faces. I just love being here because I can make Arianna feel at home, because it鈥檚 my home, too.鈥

Ram Rush Kicks Off New School Year

Students like Reya and Arianna jumped right into campus life with Ram Rush

听鈥 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 new student orientation designed to help students quickly make friends and acclimate to college life.

Ram Rush 2025 kicked off with a concert in Ram Hall featuring Luke Bower. The Goodwill Gala 鈥 an alumni favorite for over twodecades 鈥 brought Ram Fam student groups together to find outfits at thrift shops for the skate party theme of 鈥淩eality TV.鈥

Sundaes with the Smiths featured an ice cream social with President Charles and Ashley Smith, while Prayer Room brought the campus community together for a time of praise and worship. Ramily Feud, a church picnic and blacklight dodgeball brought students together for fun and games. Table Talk for women with Ashley Smith themed 鈥(Be)hold: Becoming a Woman of God and a Make Much study themed 鈥淕reat is Thy Faithfulness鈥 focused on spiritual growth.

The first week of fall semester ended with a field day, outdoor movie, lake trip and glow-in-the-dark pool party.
