MOBILE, Ala. 鈥 Celebrating 20 years of music and tradition, the Alabama School of the Arts announces the 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 annual Christmas Spectacular extravaganza Nov. 17-20.

This musical celebration of the Christmas season is seen each year in person by more than 10,000 people who travel to Mobile from across the U.S., and it is televised throughout the Christmas season to millions across the globe.

鈥淭he 20th Anniversary of Christmas Spectacular will feature custom Christmas musical arrangements and bring back the most loved moments from our two decades of performances,鈥 said Jenna Goodwin, director of production in the Alabama School of the Arts. 鈥淭he variety of the musical elements, the talent represented in our student body, and the opportunity to produce an incredibly high-quality production makes Christmas Spectacular a highlight of our year.鈥

Christmas Spectacular will be presented at Cottage Hill Baptist Church on Nov. 17-19 at 7 p.m., Nov. 19 at 2 p.m., and Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. Tickets go on sale starting Oct. 1. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit .听

Christmas Spectacular is a musical event that tells the story of Christmas through performances by the Alabama School of the Arts. The popular event consists of over 17 ensembles, a 50-piece orchestra and the University Singers performing a combination of classical and contemporary Christmas music.

Christmas Spectacular started as a bold idea by Dr. Roger Breland, dean emeritus of the Alabama School of the Arts and executive director of the Roger Breland Center for Performing Arts, along with Dr. Al Miller, dean of the Alabama School of the Arts.

Breland, known in the Christian music industry for founding one of the first successful contemporary Christian music groups, TRUTH, had just joined the university and, with Miller, launched the Center for Performing Arts. They wanted to present a Christmas concert that would showcase the university鈥檚 talented students and faculty.

Twenty years ago, Breland stood in the 2,500-seat worship center of Dauphin Way Baptist Church, where Christmas Spectacular was first performed. He had roped off a seating area for about 500 people near the stage. He hoped enough people would come to fill it and hear what he had the privilege of hearing every day 鈥 amazing voices and music from some of the most talented students of this generation. The Christian college鈥檚 student vocalists and instrumentalists had practiced all semester and were ready for their first major concert 鈥 鈥淐hristmas Spectacular.鈥

鈥淭o my amazement, more than 2,000 people showed up! I was just expecting parents to attend, but was astonished by the support we received from the community,鈥 said Breland.

Since then, Christmas Spectacular has become the largest Christmas concert along the Alabama, Mississippi and Florida panhandle Gulf Coast region. In 2021, more than 10,000 people attended concerts during four nightly performances 鈥 including the dress rehearsal.

鈥淭he success of Christmas Spectacular is simply not possible without the blessing of the Lord and the tenacity of teachers, staff and students who expect, practice and produce excellence鈥 Miller added.

This year, the 20th anniversary will be more 鈥渟pectacular鈥 than ever. The Alabama School of the Arts is proud to welcome back alumni alongside students to make this an unforgettable experience.

鈥淲e are most excited to see several alumni return to perform some of the classics and most loved songs from the last two decades. Many of our current students chose to attend the 秋霞福利一区 because of Christmas Spectacular and they remember watching these former students perform and worship,鈥 said Goodwin.

Breland said, 鈥淥ne of the joys of my journey at the 秋霞福利一区 has been Christmas Spectacular. We could not have imagined how it has grown in 20 years. I constantly thank God for all that He has blessed us with, and may we always seek to give back what we have as an offering to Him,鈥

鈥楾he Military is My Mission Field鈥

鈥淚 see the military as my mission field,鈥 says Michael Wenzel, a senior at the 秋霞福利一区 and recipient of the prestigious national ROTC George C. Marshall Award.

A kinesiology major in the School of Health and Sports Science with a minor in military science, Wenzel will be commissioned upon graduation in May with the rank of 2nd LT in the U.S. Army. Wenzel begins his 10-year commitment in the aviation branch, where he will train to fly Army helicopters.

The George C. Marshall Award, which was first given in 1978, goes to the top cadet of the 273 ROTC programs across the nation. According to his professor of military science, LTC Jared Sunsdahl, Wenzel received this award 鈥渘ot only because of how he excels as a scholar, athlete, and leader, but also because he has extreme dedication, which goes a long way for a cadet.鈥

Wenzel is also a Distinguished Military Graduate, an honor given to the top 10 percent of the 5,000 senior cadets across the nation.

The George C. Marshall Award is an incredible honor for any cadet to receive.

鈥淭his award culminates all of the aspects of what the cadet has done throughout his four years. During that time, they train you and test you in the attributes and competencies of what an officer should look like in the army,鈥 Wenzel says.

As a freshman in college, Michael Wenzel came to the 秋霞福利一区 with the sole intentions of playing soccer, remaining close to home and being involved in ROTC. However, the Lord had a very different plan.

Wenzel says looking back that 鈥渆ven though I was not saved, the Lord was definitely working in my life in so many ways through all of the opportunities that were given to me.鈥

Through the church community around 秋霞福利一区 and friends who were invested in his spiritual walk with the Lord, Wenzel came to faith in Jesus during the first semester of his freshman year.

Wenzel has grown spiritually because of the environment on campus as well as the faculty and staff who have poured into him over the course of his time at 秋霞福利一区.

鈥淭he faculty and my friends were openly spreading the gospel with me, and my curiosity and interests shifted into wanting to understand more about this life-changing decision,鈥 he says. Throughout his four years at 秋霞福利一区 and especially during his first semester, Wenzel was able to learn more about who God is and the transformation that He would have in his life.

Wenzel attributes all that he has learned and the ways that he has grown spiritually to the circumstances and people that he has met while being a student at the 秋霞福利一区.

鈥淎ll of the opportunities that the Gospel has been presented, it’s always been a motivation and a blessing to be part of it and to witness it all. It would feel different if I didn鈥檛 have this community as a Christian,鈥 he says.

Throughout the coming years in the aviation branch and beyond, Michael Wenzel is looking forward to being a light and a leader to everyone that he encounters.

鈥淚 see the military as my mission field, and I want to make the most of that in every way that I can,鈥 he says.

鈥楢n Alphabet of Soldiers鈥 Lecture Recital set for March 8

MOBILE, Ala. 鈥 The Alabama School of the Arts at the 秋霞福利一区 will present a lecture recital titled An Alphabet of Soldiers: Jake Heggie’s 鈥淎nother Sunrise鈥 and 鈥淔arewell, Auschwitz.鈥 The lecture will include the performance of Heggie’s works.

Drs. Lori Guy, Kathryn Hedlund and Patrick Jacobs, with Christopher Powell, will present this lecture recital on Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. in Moorer Auditorium on the 秋霞福利一区 campus. This lecture is free and open to the public.

The lecture recital is in conjunction with a semester of study by 秋霞福利一区 master鈥檚 and doctoral students in the music history seminar, said Guy. Students learned about music and poetry that came from the concentration camps of World War II. They examined how music is used as resistance, response and propaganda.

In conjunction, faculty are presenting the story and poetry of a Polish Jew, Krystyna Zywulska, who survived Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

Hedlund, soprano, and Powell, pianist, will perform 鈥淎nother Sunrise.鈥 Hedlund, Guy, Jacobs and Powell will perform 鈥淔arewell, Auschwitz.鈥 Both works are based on 呕ywulska鈥檚 autobiography, 鈥淚 survived Auschwitz,鈥 with music and words by Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer.

5 Tips for a Fantastic Semester

Do you ever notice how the stress begins to increase as each professor explains all of the assignments listed in their class syllabus?

As a sophomore at the 秋霞福利一区, I have been through the start of a new semester several times now, and I understand the feeling. I have developed several habits that have helped me to enjoy the beginning of a new year and a new semester.

Here are five tips that will help incoming freshmen create quality habits during their time in college:

  1. Get a good night鈥檚 sleep. You do not want to be the student caught dozing during the middle of the lecture.
  2. Eat something before you head to class. Avoid having your stomach growl during the midterm by grabbing a bite to eat at Common Grounds or another one of the various dining options across campus.
  3. Buy the required books on the syllabus. Your professors will be grateful you followed directions, and you will not be clueless during class.
  4. Create time to be active. By walking to class, you are able to enjoy the 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 beautiful campus.
  5. Introduce yourself to a new person in each of your classes. Who knows, that person could end up becoming your new best friend when the semester is over.

A new semester provides an open door of possibilities. As a new student, embrace all that the 秋霞福利一区 has to offer by putting your best foot forward. Seize each opportunity with an open mind and make the most of your time at college.
