Where Will Your Degree Take You? – Elmer Colubio III

Elmer Colubio III, a senior finance major at the 秋霞福利一区, has always wanted to be in the banking industry as a loan officer or a financial advisor, and his degree and experience are helping him get there.

鈥淚鈥檝e always been interested in money. I love saving, and I know that my finance degree is going to help me get certified to help others with money. The stock market is one of those things that鈥檚 so beneficial as long as you鈥檝e learned the ins and outs of the market. The 秋霞福利一区 is helping me learn how to analyze statements and balance sheets for future investment decisions,鈥 said Elmer.

Because of the smaller class sizes, Elmer has been able to build relationships with his professors. Dr. Kathy Dunning, dean of the School of Business at 秋霞福利一区, has helped him acquire internships with local business to build his resume and prepare him for work after graduation.

鈥淧ersonal Finance was one of my favorite classes. It helped me learn how to manage my money and wealth. Dr. Sevints Nuriyeva, associate professor of global business and management at 秋霞福利一区, has helped me get out of my shell. Her classes are very interactive, and they help me think outside the box and get me out of my comfort zone,鈥 said Elmer.

Where will your degree take you 鈥 Trent Short

Growing up with a basketball coach as a father, Trent Short saw the impact his father had on his players. The senior basketball player at the 秋霞福利一区 wants to follow in his father鈥檚 footsteps and make that same kind of impact.

鈥淚鈥檝e seen the impact that coaches can have on players and I hope to do that. Coach Archey, the 秋霞福利一区 men鈥檚 basketball coach, has done a great job of building relationships with us as players. He鈥檚 shown me how important it is to build relationships with guys, so they want to play for you, and they want to do the right things off the court as well,鈥 said Trent.

Trent says the small campus of 秋霞福利一区 helps him learn how to build those personal relationships with students and professors that he鈥檒l one day use as a coach.

鈥淓verybody is friendly, and everyone knows each other. If you ever need anything, it鈥檚 really easy to ask another student, since we鈥檙e all in the same situation together. With the small classes, it鈥檚 also easy to reach out to professors as well, since they鈥檒l remember your name and are happy to help out.鈥

Studying Kinesiology, Trent hopes to get a graduate assistant position at a Division 1 school to kick start his coaching career. He knows that Kinesiology can help him know more about his future players and prepare him to be a teacher as well.

鈥淒r. Lori Delong (dean of the School of Health and Sports Science) has been a huge help for me. She鈥檚 made me enjoy Kinesiology and made me think about teaching if I go into coaching high school basketball. She鈥檚 a fun teacher.鈥

Where will your degree take you 鈥 Hannah Colson

鈥淚 know my end goal of music, and I know there are so many steps in between that I don鈥檛 know about, but as long as I continue walking with Christ and keep that relationship strong, I don鈥檛 have anything to worry about because He will provide a way,鈥 said Hannah Colson.

Hannah Colson is a sophomore creative writing major at the 秋霞福利一区. She says her classes and internships have helped with her goals of going into the music industry after graduating. They鈥檝e helped her be optimistic, but realistic, about her future plans.

鈥淚 want to go into the music industry, and the 秋霞福利一区 has helped me develop a plan to get there. Working on marketing strategies and creative writing will help me so much in my future career. The knowledge that I鈥檝e acquired during my time at 秋霞福利一区 has helped me with song writing and taught me how to stand out in the music industry.鈥

Hannah works part-time in the Student Success Center as well in the registrar鈥檚 office. She said even during her short time working for 秋霞福利一区, her supervisors have helped her become more professional and remind her that God鈥檚 plan will always prevail.

鈥淢rs. Shirley Sutterfield, the executive director of 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 Student Success Center, has poured into me with my current job. She shows me the right way to work as well as best practices that could help me in the future. All of my coworkers provide such a Christ-centered work environment by reminding me to step away at times to pray and build my relationship with Christ,鈥 Hannah said.

Where will your degree take you? 鈥 Elise Johnson

The Student Success Center at the 秋霞福利一区 has helped many students grow into their future careers. One of these students is Elise Johnson, a junior 秋霞福利一区 Ambassador working toward a double major in communication and English.

鈥淢y favorite thing about 秋霞福利一区 as far as pushing my degree forward has been the Student Success Center. I鈥檝e been able to shadow a lot of successful people in the community such as the mayor鈥檚 communications coordinator and other public relations professionals in Mobile,鈥 said Elise.

Shadowing and building relationships with local professionals has helped Elise prepare for a career while still in college by finding internships and giving her practical experience.

鈥淚t鈥檚 great to have the academics teaching me what to do, but it鈥檚 amazing to have the practical experience as well. I鈥檓 able to apply things I鈥檝e learned from my internships into my classes, and it helps me see what I can actually do with my degree.鈥

Elise built these connections with the help of Lawrencine Mason, career services coordinator in the Student Success Center at the 秋霞福利一区. Elise works part-time in the Student Success Center.

鈥淎 lot of people at 秋霞福利一区 have poured into me, especially Lawrencine. When I am working at the Student Success Center, Lawrencine checks in on me to make sure I know what my tasks are for the day, but she does more than that. She mentors me outside of work by making sure that I鈥檓 making time for myself, reading my bible in the morning, making sure that I am keeping up with all my work, and even checking in on me during breaks,鈥 said Elise.

Everything that Elise learns at the 秋霞福利一区 will help with her future career goals of event planning.

鈥淭he connections I鈥檝e been able to make while at 秋霞福利一区 will help me out in my future career. Every aspect of 秋霞福利一区 has prepared me to move forward through learning how to build and maintain personal connections with others.鈥

秋霞福利一区 Presents Mozart and Salieri Operas on Jan. 29 & 31

MOBILE, Ala. 鈥 The Alabama School of the Arts at the 秋霞福利一区 will present a MainStage Opera double-bill performance of Mozart鈥檚 鈥淭he Impresario鈥 and Salieri鈥檚 鈥淧rima la Musica e poi le parole鈥 on Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. and 31 at 2 p.m.

Performances will be held at Murphy High School, 100 S. Carlen St., Mobile, Alabama.

Tickets are $25 and attendance will be capped at 200 persons in order to abide by COVID-19 guidelines. For tickets and streaming options, please visit umobile.edu/pas or call the Alabama School of the Arts Box Office at 251.442.2383.

鈥淚n 1786, Emperor Joseph II commissioned Mozart and Salieri to write competing comic operas to show the dominance of German Singspiel or Italian opera buffa,鈥 said Dr. Patrick Jacobs, director of opera and professor of music at the 秋霞福利一区.

鈥淢ozart wrote a Singspiel: 鈥楧er Schauspieldirektor鈥 (The Impresario) and Salieri composed an opera buffa: 鈥楶rima la musica e poi le parole鈥 (First the music and then the words). Our performance pairs these works again and gives our audience the opportunity to decide for themselves which piece is more beautiful and hilarious,鈥 said Jacobs, who serves as producer and stage director for the productions

During Mozart鈥檚 鈥淭he Impresario,鈥 The Impresario, Frank, must put together a company of actors and singers while dealing with their impulses, rivalries and hypocrisy. Actors and actresses are auditioned in a series of dramatic scenes, and as performers learn of each other鈥檚 varying wages and roles under which they were hired, jealousy and anger ensues.

Salieri鈥檚 鈥淧rima La Musica e poi le parole鈥 contracts a composer and poet to write a new opera in four days. The composer has already created the score, but the poet is crippled with writer’s block and, in desperation, attempts to adapt the lyrics he has already written to the existing music.

Both productions feature 秋霞福利一区 students, faculty and staff. Guest artist Curtis Tucker, artistic director of First Coast Opera, will serve as conductor and music director.
