秋霞福利一区 Partners with Bishop State Community College to Save Students Time and Money on Child Development Degrees

MOBILE, Ala.The 秋霞福利一区 has established a new articulation agreement with Bishop State Community College, creating a streamlined path for students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Child and Social Development. This agreement allows Bishop State students to transfer up to 62 credit hours toward the 124-credit-hour degree at the 秋霞福利一区, significantly reducing both the time and cost needed to complete their four-year degree.

鈥淭his partnership reflects our shared commitment to providing high-quality educational opportunities for students in our community,鈥 said Dr. Charles Smith, president of the 秋霞福利一区. 鈥淭ogether, we are opening doors to careers that will have a lasting impact on children, families and communities.鈥

A Seamless Transfer to a Career-Ready Degree
Students who complete the required coursework at Bishop State and meet 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 admissions criteria will benefit from a seamless and supportive transfer process into the 秋霞福利一区 School of Education鈥檚 Child and Social Development program.

秋霞福利一区鈥檚 Bachelor of Science in Child and Social Development is a non-certification degree that prepares graduates to teach and lead in Pre-K programs in private, religious and federal sites. Graduates may also pursue careers in civic, social or religious organizations; hospitals or non-profit organizations; or family and community services.

鈥淲e are excited to welcome Bishop State students to the 秋霞福利一区 family,鈥 said Dr. Ashley Milner, dean of the 秋霞福利一区 School of Education. 鈥淭his partnership signifies our commitment to young children and families as we work together to prepare high-quality early childhood professionals.鈥

Equipping Students for In-Demand Jobs
The agreement comes at a critical time as the region and nation face a shortage of early childhood education professionals. It strengthens the workforce by encouraging and supporting students pursuing a four-year degree in child and social development while promoting collaboration between both institutions to ensure a quality higher education experience.

鈥淪tudents who take advantage of this transfer opportunity will receive a faith-based, academically rigorous education that equips them to serve children and families with compassion and excellence,鈥 Milner said.

秋霞福利一区 Hosts Over 2,400 MFuge Campers for Summer of Missions and Spiritual Growth

MOBILE, Ala. 鈥 Lives are being transformed this summer at the 秋霞福利一区, where more than 2,400 middle to high school students are arriving for MFuge 鈥 week-long camps centered on missions, worship and spiritual growth.

Youth groups and leaders from 103 churches across 13 states are taking part in the summer camp program at 秋霞福利一区 operated by the .

Dr. Charles Smith, president of the 秋霞福利一区, said MFuge embodies the university鈥檚 mission to glorify God and serve others.

鈥淲hen thousands of students gather on this campus to serve our city and grow in their faith, we are witnessing the next generation of Kingdom leaders in action,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a powerful expression of what it means to live 鈥楩or Christ & His Kingdom.鈥欌

Last summer at 秋霞福利一区, the impact was clear: 90 salvations, 66 recommitments to faith and 41 calls to ministry were recorded, according to Melina Baird, event coordinator for MFuge.

A Legacy of Ministry and Missions

The Southern Baptist Convention鈥檚 FUGE Camps youth ministry program started in 1979 and now includes two primary tracks: MFuge, which incorporates opportunities for service with worship and Bible study; and Centrifuge, which focuses on recreation, Bible study, worship and topical tracks. The 秋霞福利一区 has been hosting FUGE Camps since 1981. In 1996, 秋霞福利一区 became one of the first sites to host MFuge and today is the longest-running MFuge location in the nation.

The camps are held on 24 university campuses and 11 retreat/conference centers across the United States. At the 秋霞福利一区, students and church youth group leaders get a taste of college life 鈥 living at Alabama鈥檚 #1 safest college campus with the #1 best dorms and enjoying campus amenities including sand volleyball courts, outdoor pool, disc golf and pickleball courts.

Serving the City Through Hands-on Ministry

MFuge introduces students to real-world ministry opportunities throughout the Mobile area. Campers choose from four types of service: painting, construction and yard work; children鈥檚 ministry; games and recreation; and social ministry sites such as soup kitchens, clothing closets and nursing home visits, among others. Children鈥檚 and recreation ministries are held in area parks and at organizations such as Boy鈥檚 & Girl鈥檚 Clubs. Each night, they gather in Ram Hall for worship.

鈥淭his summer during daily Bible study, students will learn about how to own their faith and not just ride the coattails of the parents鈥 faith,鈥 said Joe Hicks, FUGE Camps manager. 鈥淭hen in the afternoon, they will learn how to put this faith into action as they serve the greater Mobile community.

鈥淥ur desire is that FUGE Camps are truly a life-changing camp for all who attend this summer.鈥

Churches Return for Relationships and Impact

This year, church youth groups are coming to Mobile, Alabama, from as far away as Texas, Missouri, Illinois and North Carolina.

Baird said it鈥檚 common for churches to return year after year to the 秋霞福利一区.

鈥淲e have multiple churches that come back to the 秋霞福利一区 each year based on the relationships they鈥檝e established with ministry sites in the greater Mobile area,鈥 Baird said.

Spiritual Growth that Lasts Beyond Camp

Campers aren鈥檛 the only ones impacted by the MFuge experience. Micah Steadham, a 秋霞福利一区 graduate, served as an MFuge staff member for three years at various sites. Now 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 videographer and photographer, he reflected on seeing this summer鈥檚 first wave of campers and staff arrive.

鈥淚t brings back memories of how the Lord worked and what He did through FUGE Camps 鈥 in the lives of thousands of students and in my life,鈥 Steadham said. 鈥淚t brings a sense of joy to get to see these MFuge staffers experience what I experienced.

鈥淢y prayer for them is that they would come out of this summer with a deeper understanding and love for Jesus and for the Gospel and take that back home with them 鈥 to their churches, their communities and their everyday lives.鈥

秋霞福利一区 President Charles Smith to Graduates: Anchor Your Life in Christ听

MOBILE, Ala. 鈥撎In a powerful address during 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 2025 commencement, President Charles Smith urged graduates to 鈥渁nchor your life and joy in the wisdom of God鈥檚 Word and the unshakable love of Christ.鈥

鈥淭his degree represents more than your academic success,鈥 Smith told over 300 graduates in a ceremony held May 10 on the university鈥檚 Great Commission Lawn. 鈥淚t is a testament to your perseverance, discipline and sacrifice 鈥 qualities that will serve you well as you step into an exciting new chapter of life.鈥

Rooted in Proverbs 3:5-6, Smith challenged the Class of 2025 to: 鈥淭rust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.鈥

Four Truths Taught at 秋霞福利一区

In his message, Smith reminded graduates of four truths that serve as the foundation of everything taught at the 秋霞福利一区.

  • God loves you听鈥 鈥淣ot a smarter, holier, more accomplished version of you 鈥 the real you,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he question is not whether God loves you. The cross makes that clear. The real question is, will you trust Him to be who He promises to be?鈥
  • God has given you profound gifts听鈥撎淵our very life is a gift… the talents you cultivated here at the 秋霞福利一区 are gifts of God鈥檚 grace.鈥 He added, 鈥淭here will be times… when you doubt your abilities… In those moments… steady yourself with these truths: God loves you and has given you profound gifts.鈥
  • God has called you to steward your life and gifts for His glory and the good of the world听鈥撎淲hile the temptation is strong to use them for ourselves, our gifts are meant to bless others and point them to Christ. This is where you will find life鈥檚 deepest joys and greatest impact,鈥 he said.
  • Only Christ can satisfy your deepest longings听鈥撎淎s you enter this next chapter, commit to joining a strong local church. Immerse yourself in God鈥檚 Word. Cultivate godly friendships. Start a family. Serve your community. Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God. And as you do, commit to embracing our Great Commission Tradition here at the 秋霞福利一区,鈥 he said.

鈥淲e are proud to call you an alumnus of the 秋霞福利一区,鈥 Smith said in closing. 鈥淜eep the faith, stay the course and do not forget all that you learned here. Your Great Commission journey is just beginning, and we will be cheering you on every step of the way.鈥

Faculty of the Year Award

For the first time in the university鈥檚 history, a new award was presented at commencement:听听the Faculty of the Year award.听

The inaugural Faculty of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Julie Hughes, assistant professor of nursing and simulation lab coordinator for the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice in the School of Nursing, Celia Wallace College of Health Professions. 秋霞福利一区 Presents 2025 Weaver Awards to Logan Lipke and Anna Olsen

MOBILE, Ala. 鈥 The 秋霞福利一区 presented its top two student awards, the William K. Weaver Jr. Excellence Award and the Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award, to Logan Lipke of Orange Beach, Alabama, and Anna Olsen of Semmes, Alabama.

The awards were presented during an outdoor graduation ceremony held May 10, 2025, on the university鈥檚 Dr. Fred and Sue Lackey Great Commission Lawn.

Logan Lipke: Talented Composer and Musician

The William K. Weaver Jr. Excellence Award is presented to the most outstanding graduating male senior for excellence in exemplifying the mission of the 秋霞福利一区. Selection is made by a secret vote of the faculty based on scholarship, Christian character, leadership and service. The award presented to Logan T. Lipke is named for the university鈥檚 founding president and is considered the highest recognition possible for a 秋霞福利一区 male senior.

An exceptionally talented composer and musician, Lipke is described by faculty as a natural leader who approaches every opportunity with dedication, humility and a servant鈥檚 heart. Known as a great encourager, he constantly uplifts his peers and points them toward Christ through his actions and attitude. He is a member of the 秋霞福利一区 Worship Collective that leads worship each week in Chapel, and he serves on the university鈥檚 campus ministries team.

Lipke is generous with his time and talents, tutoring younger musicians in music theory and aural skills, while also arranging music for Christmas Spectacular, performing with the Alabama School of the Arts, and participating in the Young Artists Program and Piano Ensemble.

Lipke graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in music 鈥 composition. He received the President鈥檚 Scholastic Award and Area Award in Music.

Anna Olsen: Honors Program Servant Leader

The Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award is presented to the most outstanding graduating female senior for excellence in exemplifying the mission of the 秋霞福利一区. Selection is made by a secret vote of the faculty based on scholarship, Christian character, leadership and service. The award presented to Anna McKeever Roeser Olsen is named for B Weaver, the university鈥檚 first 鈥淔irst Lady,鈥 and is considered the highest recognition possible for a 秋霞福利一区 female senior.

Faculty describe Anna Olsen as passionate, intelligent and humble, with an amazing ability to grasp complex material quickly. She demonstrated this as an Honors Program student while completing her honors thesis one year ahead of schedule. She has served as vice president of the Honors Council and was a 秋霞福利一区 Ambassador, Ram Rush leader, Peer leader and tutor, and chapter president of two honor societies: Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society and Alphi Chi National College Honor Society.

While in college, she participated in mission trips to Salt Lake City, Guatemala and Montana, and assists with her church鈥檚 childcare and youth group. She begins her career after graduation as an educator at Heritage Preparatory School in Atlanta, Georgia.

Olsen graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in education. She is an Honors with Thesis Program graduate and received the President鈥檚 Scholastic Award and Area Award in Communication.

Celebrating Roger Breland: A Lifetime of Music, Ministry & Mentorship

MOBILE, Ala. 鈥 鈥淲e have seen miracles.鈥

That鈥檚 how Dr. John Roger Breland sums up a life dedicated to spreading the Gospel message to people of all nations through word, song and deed. This legendary figure is retiring as executive director of the Roger Breland Center for Performing and will be honored at the university鈥檚 2025 graduation ceremony on May 10.

秋霞福利一区 President Charles Smith said, 鈥淚t鈥檚 difficult to imagine the 秋霞福利一区 without Roger and Linda Breland. For over two decades, these dear friends have invested in our university and changed the lives of countless students. Dr. Breland鈥檚 contribution to the Christian music industry is unparalleled. Literally hundreds of musicians, artists and worship leaders can trace their roots back to his leadership and investment.鈥

For 31 years, Breland served as founder and director of TRUTH 鈥 one of the first internationally successful contemporary Christian recording groups. For the past 23 years, he played a pivotal role in shaping the 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 Alabama School of the Arts. Along the way, Breland mentored generations of young men and women who today are successful leaders in the music industry and churches around the world.

鈥淒espite their years in the spotlight, I would argue Roger and Linda鈥檚 greatest impact happened off the stage, where they quietly supported, mentored and prayed for hundreds of students,鈥 said Smith. 鈥淎lmost every week I hear stories of the Brelands鈥 caring for others. What a remarkable legacy of faithfulness, and what a privilege to honor them as they step into this new season of ministry.鈥

Trailblazer and Trendsetter

In 1971, Breland and his wife, Linda, took a leap of faith and founded the Christian music group TRUTH, an acronym for Trust, Receive, Unchangeable, True Happiness (in Jesus).

鈥淗e was a trendsetter, a trailblazer,鈥 said son Jason Breland, a 秋霞福利一区 alumnus who serves as worship leader at First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, Tennessee.

鈥淗e was doing things that nobody had ever done, introducing music like Gaither Music, Andre Crouch music, and bringing instruments like drums and guitars and electric keyboards into churches that had never seen or heard anything like that before. Now we stand on his shoulders, and so many of us use all of those components today in our churches,鈥 the younger Breland said.

A Great Commission Mission

Focused on their Great Commission mission, Breland and TRUTH traveled the globe, sharing the story of salvation through Jesus Christ and showing His love to the people and communities they touched.

They raised over $500,000 through their tours to establish the TRUTH Leprosy Hospital for children in Ghana, West Africa. TRUTH brought Bibles, medical supplies and the Gospel to Romania following the overthrow of the Communist dictatorship; worked with the Baptist World Alliance to bring food, clothing and the Gospel to Brazil; smuggled hundreds of Bibles into Russia and took hospital and medical supplies to the children of Chernobyl following the nuclear disaster in 1986.

During one of their most memorable tours, over 20,000 people responded to the Gospel message in the Philippines. They worked alongside the pastor of The Cathedral of Praise Manila who had become a Christian at a TRUTH concert while a high school student in Fairhope, Alabama.

Their years as members of TRUTH helped launch the careers of artists such as Avalon, 4Him, Natalie Grant and Steven V. Taylor. In 2000, Breland and TRUTH were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

The Ministry Continues at 秋霞福利一区

A former 秋霞福利一区 trustee, Breland joined the Christian university鈥檚 faculty in 2002 as artist-in-residence.

鈥淢y job was to recruit talented students, recommend gifted faculty and provide a platform for them to do what they do so well,鈥 Breland recalls.

Since then, he has held a variety of leadership roles, including as dean of the Alabama School of the Arts. Breland and Dr. Al Miller, now retired, led an expansion of the university鈥檚 music program, including establishing its first doctoral degree in musical arts. Along with faculty whose expertise ranges from opera to worship leadership, they prepared thousands of graduates to pursue their professional calling as musicians, educators, worship leaders, missionaries, music industry professionals, music ministers and more.

During Breland鈥檚 tenure:

  • He founded the ensemble VOICES of Mobile. Under his direction, VOICES recorded 20 CDs; traveled to 11 nations; performed at the White House five times and at Carnegie Hall in New York City three times; crisscrossed the United States and traveled to many nations including China, Cuba, Israel, Jordan, the Philippines and Romania, presenting over 2,000 concerts in churches, conventions, civic events and on national television.
  • Co-founded what is now the Roger Breland Center for Performing Arts, home to the university鈥檚 performing ensembles. 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 choirs, theatre groups, and vocal and instrumental ensembles have performed worldwide.
  • Launched Christmas Spectacular 22 years ago to showcase students in ASOTA and share the true meaning of Christmas. Today, 鈥淪pec鈥 is the largest-attended Christmas event on the gulf coast.
  • Supported a fundraising effort that resulted in 秋霞福利一区鈥檚 designation as an All Steinway School.
  • Secured a donation and support for The Fisher/Brewer Recording Studio, now a $1 million investment.

鈥極ur Gifted Students鈥

Breland says the greatest miracle he has seen 鈥渉as been our gifted students. Observing them growing spiritually, musically and using their gifts to become successful 鈥 that is the greatest blessing.鈥

He and Linda established the Roger and Linda Breland Endowed Scholarship at the 秋霞福利一区 to give future generations of student the advantage of a Christ-centered higher education. The endowed scholarship continues to grow, with tax-deductible donations to umobile.edu/give.

In 2019, the 秋霞福利一区 awarded Breland the Doctor of Humane Letters, citing 鈥渁 remarkable career.鈥

Mentor and Friend

Dr. Andrew Goodwin, dean of the Alabama School of the Arts and a 秋霞福利一区 graduate, said Breland 鈥渉as been one of the biggest influences in my life 鈥 both as a mentor and as a friend.

鈥淗is leadership, wisdom and passion for music and ministry have shaped not just the Alabama School of the Arts but also the lives of so many students, including mine. I wouldn鈥檛 be where I am today without his encouragement and belief in me.

鈥淒r. Breland taught me what it means to be a musician, but more importantly, he showed me what it looks like to follow Jesus. He helped me learn that the 23 hours off the stage are more important than the one hour on the stage.

鈥淎lthough it is good to reflect on the miles traveled and the songs that have been sung, I believe Dr. Breland鈥檚 legacy is the impact he has had on the lives of over 6,000 students that have come through the Alabama School of the Arts,鈥 Goodwin said.

The Greatest Miracle

Throughout his career, Breland traveled more than 4 million miles across 50 nations, presented over 12,000 concerts and produced 100 albums. But his greatest accomplishment isn鈥檛 found in the number of miles traveled or concerts performed. It鈥檚 in the message he has dedicated his life to teaching:

鈥淭here鈥檚 really only one song to sing, and that is the song that will honor God. We want to do that with excellence.鈥

It鈥檚 not enough, he tells students, to simply believe the words of the song.

鈥淭he bottom line for people who live our life on the platform in ministry is not that you believe what you sing,鈥 he says. 鈥淭he most important thing is that you live what you sing. I want students to know that what they do involves so much more than music.鈥

The difference between 鈥済ood鈥 and 鈥済reat鈥 is usually hard work, he says. 鈥淏ut there鈥檚 something even more important. When I ask an aspiring Christian artist, 鈥楧o you believe what you鈥檙e singing?鈥 the answer is almost always a resounding 鈥榊别蝉!鈥

Then comes the real challenge.

鈥淐an you live what you鈥檙e singing 鈥 that is the challenge when you鈥檙e singing about Jesus. Because when you sing about Jesus, it鈥檚 not just about hitting the right notes 鈥 it鈥檚 about living a life that reflects the truth of the song,鈥 he says.

A New Calling

Looking ahead, Breland says, 鈥淢y new calling is to spend quality time with Linda. I started touring full-time when I was 27. Linda and I have three sons, 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. I am now 81 鈥 it鈥檚 probably time for me to stay home.鈥

As he takes his final bow from his official role at the 秋霞福利一区, Breland leaves behind a legacy far greater than music. He leaves a call to excellence, to authenticity and to a faith that doesn鈥檛 just perform 鈥 but transforms.

鈥淚 would do it all again,鈥 Breland says.
